Distraction….. it’s part of our life now adays. I cannot have a conversation without my phone ringing, or getting an email or text message. Not to mention the facebook page comments or the email constantly coming through my phone. Distraction has become a not-so-welcomed part of most of our lives. Some of us guard against it, but some of us are obsessed with it. It consumes us, and sometimes it leads to destruction.
However, it’s not just technology that is distracting us these days. We have a culture that is obsessed with addictions of all kinds. I see people all the time that struggles with anxiety, or money, or self-loathing, or success, or food, or YOU NAME IT, IT’S OUT THERE. I am convinced that these are not just addictions, but arrows from satan to distract you from your calling in Christ.
1 Peter 5:8 says,
Be sober of spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.
I know that distraction is one of the most powerful weapons that satan throws at believers. He knows that you might not cheat on your husband, or steal a car, or murder someone, but he knows how to get you off coarse.
I myself MANY times have been led away by distractions in my life. One big one was my first marriage. I was positive that God was calling my into ministry at a young age, and didn’t answer the call. I was distracted by a handsome young man who was interested in me, and it was my obsession. It later turned into my personal destruction. I will never forget emotionally where that relationship ended me. ONLY BY THE GRACE OF GOD, was I allowed to get back on track and forge forward in the pursuit of ministry.
I believe the children of Israel are the same way. They knew after God delivered them from the land of Egypt, that God promised them that Promise Land. They believed Him for a while until Moses had to go to meet with God on Mount Sinai for 40 days. When Moses came down, he found this nation that 40 days prior had trusted God worshipping a golden calf they had built for themselves because they didn’t know where Moses had gone.
(You can read the story in Ex. 19-33.)
How do we veer so far away from God promises and call sometimes?????
James 1:14-15 says, But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings for death.
We listen to ourselves and get plugged into what we want. We forget that there is a God Who is waiting to lead us and we start leading ourselves and feeding our selfish desires which brings about destruction.
I know we all have something that we struggle with. What’s yours? I know what mine is, and I try to keep myself aware. When you are aware of something that could turn into a destructive pattern in your life, GUARD AGAINST IT!! Put up safe guards, and stay the coarse with your relationship with God.
In 1 Peter 5:9 it says, But resist him (satan), firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.
God says, RESIST HIM!!!!!!! THAT IS THE ANSWER TO DISTRACTION. Resist the urge, and call on the name of the Lord!
What is distracting you today????? God is just a prayer away!
